Zurich

Zurich is one of the nicest cities that I had visited on this trip. Not only it has beautiful sceneries, the place is clean and well-organized. The transport infrastructure is really convenient, on time and efficient. People are also environmentally conscious and they take the effort to split or recycle their trash.

If there is one thing I don't like about Zurich or the other cities that I visited on this trip, it is the public toilets. One might need to pay up 2 Swiss franc just to use the public toilet!

Montreux

I was there for a meeting held over the weekend with a few local colleagues. It was a great opportunity to know fellow colleagues who are based in other regions.

There was this interesting team building challenge where we have to eat some cherries and try to spit it as far as possible into a star-shaped area. Points are awarded depending where the seed land. It was really funny that during the eating part, some of my team mates ended up swallowing the seed instead!

I also got the chance to try out the Alphorn though the best I did was emitting a monotonous tone from it while others manage to play some tunes with it.

The biking tour, led by the amazing Daniel Wyss was a memorable experience. Cycling uphill on the Swiss mountains was definitely more challenging than I had expected though the ride downhill is simply exhilarating!

Recipe for Blood Cockles

Blood cockles is one of my favorite food. When I am feeling down, a
plate of cockles and a bottle of tiger is all I need to cheer me up.
When I am happy, cockles and beer is a good way to celebrate.

One of my favorite way of preparing cockles is to marinate them with
dark soy sauce.Although it looks like a simple dish, there is still
quite a bit of work to prepare it. So today I share with you this
delicious way of preparing cockles.

Blood Cockles Recipe

1. Buy some fresh cockles from the supermarket.
2. Give it a good scrub to make sure that it is clean.
3. Chop some chili padi into small bits.
4. Finely chop some garlic
5. Set the water to boil
6. Once the water is boiling, dump all the cockles into the hot water
7. Immediately scoop them up
8. Open the cockles into half.
9. Add a dash of Chinese cooking wine.
10. Add in the garlic and chili padi.
11. Add in the dark soy sauce.
12. Mixed well and chill it.
13. Enjoy it!

The recipe is pretty simple though the scrubbing and opening of the
cockles require some work. Cooking the cockles is also not as easy as
it seems. Most people tend to overcook them.

The trick is to make sure the you have sufficient water and it is
boiling before putting in the cockles. Once the you in the cockles,
you must immediately scoop them up. If the water is hot enough, this
short moment is already adequate to cook the cockles and make them easy
for opening.

The cockles that were prepared this time round were really great. They
are wickedly disgusting but yet such a bloody delight! So do give this
recipe a try and I believe you would love it too!

Whipping up a meal together

Cooking together can be quite fun and we had a great meal tonight! Evelyn did the cooking but I think I can claim the credit for decorating the plates. :)

A nice meal of grilled pork chop with side servings of brocolli, tomatoes and baked beans.

Happy National Day!

Living in Singapore has its ups and downs. What matter most at the end of the day is to remember that your loved ones will always be here for you.

"This is where I won't be alone, for this is where I know it is home."

I wish everyone a Happy National Day!

Watching some of MJ video reminds us of how great he used to be

Michael Jackson seems to be forgotten for the past few years that is until his recent death. Looking back at some of his performance, it is not hard to understand why the king of pop would be greatly missed.

I think human being is a pathetic species. It is really ironic to see so many people paying tribute to him only after his death and yet no one seems to be around him during his living moments when he most needed it. Sadly, it is also at this moment that many will also seek to profit from his death.

RIP Michael

Board Game Review - Hansa

Hansa is one of the those good board games that occassionally slide under the radar. Hopefully this review would do the game some justice. Read on and I belive you will like this hidden gem.

Overview

Hansa is a game for 2 to 4 players by Michael Schact and published by Uberplay. In this game, players are merchants of the Hanseatic League (aka Hansa). Players get to control a ship that travels to different ports of the Baltic area. Through the trading of goods at the various ports, players gain victory points.

Game Components

Despite the small box packaging, the game components are of high quality. The game board is beautifully illustrated and function well though I would prefer it to be slightly bigger.

The single sheet rulebook is simple and well layout with clear illustrations and examples.

The game bits are simple but of great quality as what you would expect of Eurogames.

The beautifully crafted wooden ship definitely gives this game its unique character.

I believe you would agree that the Thalers (currency used in the game) look just as great!

The round wooden chips represent the market booths in the game...

and of course the goods that players get to buy.

Game Play

Players strive to get the most victory points and this is mainly done through selling of goods and setting up of their market booths in different ports. Players can move the ship through different shipping routes and visit different ports to buy goods.

Rhis task is not as simple as it looks. Moving the ship and buying of the goods require players to pay Thalers. However players get only 3 Thalers at the start of their turn and can only keep a limited amount of Thalers and goods at the end of their turn. Planning a good shipping route is crucial to do well in this game.

Apart from buying goods, players need to also setup their market booths. Market booths play an important strategic role in the game.
Being a market leader in any port (most number of market booths) will allow the player to get the goods for free. Other players wanting to buy goods at the port will have to pay the market leader as well.

They are also crucial for players to sell their goods. Although players can buy goods at any ports, they can only sell their goods in ports which they have at least a market booth. To sell their goods, players need to sell at least 2 of the same goods (based on the color).

Selling goods will enable player to gain victory points. The more goods (by number of barrels) you sell, the more points you get at the end of the game.

Though the gameplay sounds simple, what make Hansa really shines is that it requires players to make tough decisions.

At each port, players can only perform one of the 3 actions (buying goods, selling goods or setting up their markets). Hence players need to plan their routes well.

Each action also has its trade off. To setup their market booths, players need to discard their goods which mean that they have less goods to sell for victory points.

Similarly, selling goods at a port requires players to give up one of their existing market booth. Selling goods also mean that you have less goods that can be used to setup the market booths.

Wrestling with the decisions is what makes Hansa challenging and deeply satisfying.

Game Theme

I like the the trading theme in the game. The gameplay and component fits the theme well. Using the Hanseatic league is a nice touch, bringing players back the trading era of the middle ages.

The different colors of the goods work well in the game but I think having different type of goods such as corn, sugar, etc, would make the game theme even better.

Conclusion

Hansa is a great game which I think deserves more attention. The decision making part of the game is interesting and satisfying as players try to come up with the most effective sequence of decisions.

This is also a more tactical game instead of a strategical game. It is hard to plan ahead in this game since what you can do is highly dependent on the actions taken by the previous players. The shipping routes could also get a bit repetitive which could affect the replayability of this game.

There could also be moments of downtime as players can get stuck in analysis paralysis during their turn but it isn't really that big deal considering the quality of the gameplay that you get from the game.

So if you have yet try Hansa, it is definitely one of the hidden gems worth checking out.

Facebook vanity URL

Well I guess most of you must have the Facebook vanity URL by now.

I manage to get mine is at http://www.facebook.com/weekee. With the URL, it is easier for you to share with your friends on how to contact and find you on Facebook.

However if you can't get your desired username, there is another good way to make it easier for your friends to find you. If you have your own domain name which everyone already know, what you could do is simply create a sub domain and redirect it to your Facebook profile.

For example for Pitstop Cafe blogsite, it is accessible at www.pitstopcafe.com.sg but if you type in fb.pitstopcafe.com.sg, it will direct you to the cafe Facebook page instead.

With this simple modification, you can reuse your domain name and make it easy for people or customers to reach your Facebook profile.

Hope you find this suggestion useful!

Impression on bing

 bing.jpg

Microsoft recently launched their new search engine named bing. I must say that this is the most decent attempt by Microsoft at search. Previous search attempts by Microsoft are totally confusing and unimaginative. I can't remember if it is suppose to be msn search, windows search, Microsoft search or Live search.

Bing definitely sound much better. It is simple, catchy and easy to remember. So how does it fare?

For a start, I like bing homepage. The interface is simple and the photographs used on the page background are a great visual treat.I am basically checking out bing everyday just to see the picture of the day. It would be great it would be possible to have a higher res for a desktop wallpaper.

So other than looking pretty, how does the bing search engine fare? It is hard to test the bing engine based on search results. I been using bing for a few week and so far the experience has been pleasant. There are definitely some important features that are lacking but there are also some interesting features. It is definitely much more decent than the over hype Cuil .

One of the nice features is the related search sidebar. Every time you do a search, a list of related searches appear on the left side bar and some of the suggested search are pretty interesting and relevant.

For example, searching for technocrunch list a few related search like valleywag, mashable, crunchgear, etc which are pretty good suggestions.

3.jpg

15.jpg

When you move to the right of the search results, a box open up with more details. I think this feature is pretty redundant. I mean if the description on the search results can't get you to click on the link, why would more words make any difference? Furthermore, it is also easier to just click to surf to the page rather than to hover and wait for the extra details to appear.

The search results in general are pretty satisfactory though it the lack of certain features makes it limited. For example, my wife favorite online shop Mayuki does not get listed in bing while it is the first spot on Google search. This could because bing isn't that well indexed in terms of non English sites.

Not found on bing

but on Google, the first result link to this page where Evelyn buys most of her stuff,

Bing also lacks the ability to suggest the right search term when you get your search text wrong. Instead of suggesting a search term that you want, it simply shows you a page indicating no search results were found. This makes Google easier to search if you do not know the exact spelling of the search term. Nevertheless, this should not be a very tough feature to implement and I believe bing will have this feature subsequently.

It is worthy to mention bing image search feature as well. Apart from searching for images based on your search text, you can also filter it further to pictures that are photograph or illustration, black and white photos and photos that have only faces. Though google has similar features for the image search, bing definitely have a nicer layout and much easier to use.

6.jpg

In conclusion, I find bing a really interesting entry into the area of search engines and it is a very good effort by Microsoft. Bing has the potential to be a great new platform for Microsoft to start afresh and experiment with new ideas and products. It is currently disappointing to see that Bing has actually link back to Live for other services instead of keeping the branding distinctive.

I personally hope they would have a new email service (@bing.com). I think it would help attract the younger generation who like to get a new email service with a nice name instead of ending up with long and hard to remember name with overuse email services like gmail or hotmail.

graph.png

Bing currently seems to be off on a good start in terms of traffic ranking on Alexa and I think Microsoft would be able to give bing a wide reach and awareness based on their marketing power and the numerous channels that they have such as Internet Explorer, MSN, Windows Mobile, etc.

However it would be interesting to see how they are able to actually convert people into using bing as their default mode of search. Even if bing is a good search engine which return good search results, it would still be an uphill task to change people habits and perceptions.

With that said, after having Google as the default search engine for other ten years, it is refreshing to see something new in the search space. It is definitely worthwhile to give bing a try. Even if all else fail, just the different fabulous photographs on bing makes it a refreshing visit everyday.

So what are your thoughts on bing? Do you like it?

Don’t touch me until you wash your hand

mrbrown recently did a really hilarious parody of the Wonder Girls 'Nobody" in their recent podcast about the habit of washing hands.

Not surprisingly, someone actually did a remix of the podcast with MTV and sing-along lyrics.

The mrbrown team really has amazing talents! This song is definitely a more sticky and memorable way of spreading the message about personal hygiene compared to NEA run-off-the-mill boring posters.

So if you enjoy it, do share the video with your friends and do your part in keeping Singapore safe from the spread of H1N1.
